Chicago Workers Occupy Window Factory, Site of 2008 Action

A Chicago window factory that was occupied by workers in 2008 is now facing a second occupation by some of the same employees. About 65 workers at the Goose Island plant run by Serious Energy have occupied the factory in an attempt to save their jobs after the company announced plans to close the plant and consolidate its operations. In 2008, some of the same workers were involved in a famous six-day sit-in after Republic Windows and Doors gave workers just three days notice before closing the factory. The sit-in drew national attention and union workers reached a settlement where they each received $6,000.

Occupy Philadelphia Protesters Acquitted of Sit-in Charges

Ten members of Occupy Philadelphia have been acquitted on charges of obstructing a highway during a sit-in last year outside of the city’s police headquarters. Their case marked the first full courtroom trial for Occupy Philadelphia protesters.

Report: NYPD Employed Snooping Tactics for

Criminal Organizations in Muslim Spying

New details have emerged on the New York City Police Department’s spying on Muslim residents across the Northeast. The Associated Press reports the NYPD targeted Muslim mosques with tactics normally reserved for criminal organizations, including collecting the license plates of worshippers, monitoring them on surveillance cameras and cataloging sermons through a network of informants. The disclosures follow the news this week NYPD agents monitored mosques and Muslim businesses in Newark, New Jersey, unbeknownst to local officials.

    Thanks, John, for asking!

However, I have avoided “Facebook” and its cousins to date. Hopefully, that will continue to be the case. I have little respect for the concept. I know almost everybody is on it, but it is dangerous (particularly to a political blogger such as I – I already have STALKERS), trivial, and would engender all sorts of trivial comments, which I would NOT PUBLISH!

If I have to go there just to get larger Hit numbers, it will be a sad day. There is no “facebook like button” here – so far!

Attorney General Eric Holder is expected to offer a legal defense today of Obama’s campaign to assassinate U.S. citizens overseas who have alleged ties to al-Qaeda. Holder’s speech comes five months after a U.S. drone killed the U.S.-born cleric Anwar al-Awlaki in Yemen. Another drone in Yemen later killed al-Awlaki’s teenage son, also a U.S. citizen.

Aid Groups Criticize CIA for Fake Vaccination Campaign in Pakistan

An increase in polio in Pakistan is being linked to a secret CIA ploy used in the hunt for Osama bin Laden. With the help of a Pakistani doctor, the CIA set up a fake vaccination campaign in the city of Abbottabad in an effort to get DNA from the bin Laden family. A coalition of U.S. aid groups have written a letter to CIA head David Petraeus saying the covert program has cast doubt on the intentions and integrity of all humanitarian groups in Pakistan and undermined the international humanitarian community’s efforts to eradicate polio. Last year, Pakistan recorded the highest number of polio cases in the world.

Zimmerman Arrested, Charged with 2nd-Degree Murder
    Facebook_20 Twitter_20
    Reddit_20 Email_20 Addthis_20

Forty-five days after killing the unarmed African-American teenager Trayvon Martin, George Zimmerman has been detained and charged with second-degree murder in Florida. Announcing the charges Wednesday evening, Special Prosecutor Angela Corey insisted that public outcry had nothing to do with Zimmerman’s arrest.

Angela Corey: “I can tell you we did not come to this decision lightly. This case is like a lot of the difficult cases we have handled for years here in our circuit. And we made this decision in the same manner. Let me emphasize that we do not prosecute by public pressure or by petition. We prosecute based on the facts of any given case, as well as the laws of the state of Florida.”

The charges against Zimmerman carry a minimum of 25 years. Trayvon Martin’s mother, Sybrina Fulton, who has campaigned tirelessly for Zimmerman’s arrest, welcomed the charges.

Sybrina Fulton: “We wanted nothing more, nothing less. We just wanted an arrest, and we got it. And I say thank you. Thank you, Lord. Thank you, Jesus. Secondly, I just want to speak from my heart to your heart, because a heart has no color. It’s not black, it’s not white; it’s red. And I want to say thank you from my heart to your heart.”

Connecticut Lawmakers Vote to Abolish Death Penalty

Lawmakers in Connecticut have given final approval to a measure that would repeal the state’s death penalty. The bill now goes to Gov. Dannel Malloy, who has pledged to sign it into law. Connecticut would become the 17th state overall and the fifth in five years to abolish the death penalty, but the change would only apply to future cases. The 11 prisoners currently on death row in Connecticut would still face capital punishment. Under an amendment approved by the state senate, those no longer facing the death penalty would be held in conditions akin to solitary confinement in a bid to match the conditions of death row.

A new report strongly condemns police and administrators at University of California, Davis, involved in the controversial pepper-spraying of student Occupy protesters last November. The incident sparked a nationwide outcry after video was posted online showing a campus police lieutenant repeatedly pepper-spraying students in the face from only a few feet away as they sat on the ground. A university-appointed task force found the November 18 incident “should and could have been prevented.” The report questioned the legal basis for the crackdown and detailed multiple deficiencies, including a failure by the administration to consider alternatives to police action. A security consulting firm also found Lt. John Pike broke police rules by using a high-pressure pepper-spray canister that is not supposed to be used within six feet of victims.

The U.S. Justice Department has filed suit against the computer giant Apple and five major publishers for allegedly fixing the prices of electronic books. The lawsuit accuses Apple and the publishers of raising prices for millions of consumers by colluding to eliminate competition in the e-book market. Attorney General Eric Holder unveiled the case on Wednesday.

Eric Holder: “Beginning in the summer of 2009, we allege that executives at the highest levels of the companies included in today’s lawsuits, concerned that e-book sellers had reduced prices, worked together to eliminate competition among stores selling e-books, ultimately increasing prices for consumers. Now, as a result of this alleged conspiracy, we believe that consumers paid millions of dollars more for some of the most popular titles.”

Amnesty: Syria Committing Crimes Against Humanity

Amnesty International is accusing the Syrian government of crimes against humanity and deliberately targeting civilian areas linked to support for opposition rebels. In a new report, Amnesty says its researchers collected evidence from 23 villages and towns of indiscriminate killings by government forces and affiliated militias. Amnesty adviser Donatella Rovera said civilians are enduring massive brutality.

Donatella Rovera: “The civilian population is very much on the receiving end, getting caught in the conflict and being, quite frankly, mercilessly targeted by government forces who have been pounding towns and villages, going into people’s homes, taking young men out of the houses and executing them in front of their families and burning down their homes.”

In its report, Amnesty renewed its call for an arms embargo on Syria and for the Security Council to refer the Syrian government to the International Criminal Court.

U.S. Official: Clinton Put “Spin” on Claim About Russian Helicopters in Syria

U.S. officials are backing off claims Russia has sent new shipments of attack helicopters to aid the Syrian regime’s crackdown on opposition rebels. On Tuesday, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton accused Russia of supplying the aircraft in what amounted to the harshest U.S. criticism of Russia’s Syria ties to date. But on Wednesday, the Obama administration acknowledged the helicopters had likely been sent back from Syria to Russia for routine repairs months ago and were now just being returned. A senior Pentagon official told the New York Times that Clinton “put a little spin on it to put the Russians in a difficult position.” In response to Clinton’s initial comments, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov accused the U.S. of hypocrisy, saying: “We are not providing Syria or any other place with things which can be used in struggle with peaceful demonstrators, unlike the United States, which regularly supplies such equipment to this region.” Despite the partial retraction, Clinton continued with her criticism of Russia on Wednesday.

Hillary Clinton: “Russia says it wants peace and stability restored. It says it has no particular love lost for (Syrian President Bashar al-) Assad. And it also claims to have vital interests in the region and relationships that it wants to continue to keep. They put all of that at risk if they do not move more constructively right now. And I would emphasize that the United States has provided no military support to the Syrian opposition. None.”
(TABACCO: It’s a “matter of trust”. Remember the old TV game show “Who Do You Trust?”

A Bahrain appeals court has convicted nine medics who were part of an original group of 20 sentenced last year for treating demonstrators during anti-government protests. The former senior medic at Bahrain’s top hospital was sentenced to five years in prison, while the eight others received sentences ranging from one month to three years. Nine other medics of the original 20 had their verdicts dismissed. The prosecution of the medics and their torture while in custody has been widely criticized. In a statement, the U.S.-based group Physicians for Human Rights said: “It is a travesty of justice that the trials continued and that the medics are now sentenced to jail time.”

Report: U.S. Expanding Spying Across Africa

The Washington Post is reporting the U.S. is dramatically expanding covert spying operations across the continent of Africa, creating a network of air bases to help monitor and target militants. As part of the effort, the U.S. is reportedly deploying small, unarmed aircraft disguised as private planes that record video and intercept radio and cellphone signals. The spying is overseen by U.S. Special Operations forces but also involves both African troops and private military contractors. The operation comes as part of the Obama administration’s expanded use of Special Operations forces in secretive efforts to monitor and even kill militants around the world.

Egypt Expands Detention Powers Before Elections

Egypt’s ruling military government has expanded the powers of state forces to detain civilians just days ahead of the country’s runoff election. In a joint statement, more than a dozen Egyptian rights groups said the decree effectively reimposes martial law and reinforces suspicion the upcoming transfer of power to a civilian government “will only be phony and won’t prevent the military from remaining a major player in political life.”

Egyptian Activists Launch Election Boycott; Court to Rule on Shafik Candidacy

Ahmed Shafik, who served as prime minister under ousted leader Hosni Mubarak, will square off against Muslim Brotherhood candidate Mohamed Morsi in this weekend’s runoff vote. A court is ruling today on whether Shafik is eligible to run under a law banning Mubarak-era officials. The law was passed in April, but a lower court later ruled parts of it were unconstitutional. Egyptian activists meanwhile have unveiled a campaign to boycott the vote, calling it a false choice under ongoing military rule. Boycott organizer Tarek Shalaby said Egypt’s military rulers have effectively rigged the election to ensure their continued dominance.

Tarek Shalaby: “They’re trying to show us that there’s no other way for the revolution to continue except for collaborating with SCAF (Supreme Council of the Armed Forces) in this elections that they’ve made for us. And obviously they make these elections customized specifically for them, so that the result that comes out, whatever it is and whoever it is, works perfectly for them. And that’s why what we need to do is we need to reject these elections, refuse to collaborate with them, and make sure that we organize ourselves.”

3 Killed in U.S. Drone Strike in Pakistan

At least three people have been killed in a U.S. drone attack in the Pakistani town of Miranshah in North Waziristan. Pakistani officials say the attack targeted militants in a central market.

(Quote from Howard Zinn, ‘You Can’t Be Neutral On A Moving Train’, “If one person kills another person, that is murder; but if a government kills 100,000 persons, that is patriotism! And they say we’re disturbing the peace. But there is no peace! What really bothers them is that we’re disturbing the War!”)

U.S.-Pakistan Stalemate Continues over Afghanistan Supply Route

The drone strikes have continued as the U.S. and Pakistan remain at odds over the reopening of NATO supply routes for the war in Afghanistan. On Wednesday, Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said Pakistan’s closure is costing the U.S. an additional $100 million a month. The talks have stalemated over a number of issues including the U.S. refusal to apologize for an air strike that killed 24 Pakistani troops last year. In Islamabad, Pakistani Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar denied claims that a Pakistani demand for higher tariffs on the routes is preventing an agreement.

Hina Rabbani Khar: “Pakistan is not in any sort of a price-gouging debate right now. So these impressions are indeed incorrect and and must be dispersed as soon as possible. We are — as we said, the U.S. side knows very well as to what are the needs and requirements for us to enable us to move in that direction, to enable us to take that decision (to reopen the routes). So I would like to keep it at that.”

JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon appeared before lawmakers on Wednesday for the first time since his bank lost $3 billion in a risky speculative bet. Dimon apologized for the loss but failed to explain how it occurred. He was repeatedly confronted by protesters over the course of the hearing.

Protester: “This man is a criminal, and people need to shout out about this man and 18 other cronies that have been stealing near-zero-interest loans from the people, when the small businesses can’t get the same loans, when the people are deprived loans to get into their — to keep their houses, when people are being thrown out on the streets. ”

Billionaire Sheldon Adelson Shifts Donations to Romney

The billionaire casino mogul and right-wing donor Sheldon Adelson has thrown his financial support behind Republican front-runner Mitt Romney. Adelson and his wife have donated $10 million to the pro-Romney super PAC, Restore Our Future, in the past few days. Adelson initially supported Newt Gingrich during the Republican primary, giving a pro-Gingrich super PAC more than $20 million. His support prompted Gingrich to adopt an even harsher anti-Palestinian stance, declaring Palestinians are an invented people. Adelson has said he could wind up spending around $100 million to support Republican candidates in the 2012 race. He’s already spent around $35 million.

Gingrich: U.S. Elections “Rigged in Favor of the Wealthy”

Ironically, the donation by Gingrich’s former backer to Romney came just as Gingrich himself openly complained that U.S. elections are rigged in favor of the wealthy. Gingrich was speaking in an appearance on MSNBC.

Newt Gingrich: “It’s very hard to compete with a billionaire, if they get to spend all the money they want and the middle-class candidate’s raising money in $2,500 units. So I think the current system is rigged, frankly, in favor of the wealthy.”

    Romney Booed During NAACP Address

Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney faced an icy reception on Wednesday as he addressed the annual convention of the NAACP. Romney drew boos from the crowd when he vowed to repeal President Obama’s healthcare law and billed himself as the better candidate for the African-American community.

Mitt Romney: “If our goal is jobs, we have to stop spending over a trillion dollars more than we take in every year. And so, and so, to do that I am going to eliminate every non-essential expensive program I can find. That includes Obamacare — and I’m going to work to reform and save … (Audience boos). My agenda is not to put in place a series of policies that get me a lot of attention and applause. My policy would be, number one: Create jobs for the American people. I do not have a hidden agenda. I submit to you this — if you want a president that will make things better in the African-American community, you are looking at him. (Audience boos). You take a look.”

Romney later drew controversy when he discussed his NAACP appearance at a fundraising event last night in Montana. Romney reportedly told the crowd: “If they want more stuff from government tell them to go vote for the other guy-more free stuff. But don’t forget nothing is really free.”

House GOP Votes to Repeal Obamacare

As Mitt Romney continued to vow an end to so-called “Obamacare,” the Republican-controlled House passed a measure to repeal the law. Democrats say the measure has no chance of passing the Senate. Speaking on the House floor, House Majority Leader Eric Cantor and Democratic Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi traded barbs over the law.

Eric Cantor: “We are trying to end the era of Washington-controlled healthcare. We believe, as do most of the American people, that’s — it’s patient-centered care is our goal. That’s where we need to start. We start along the path to that goal by repealing Obamacare.”

Nancy Pelosi: “American people want us to be creating jobs. That’s what we should be using this time on the floor for. Not this bill to nowhere — bill to nowhere that does serious damage to the health and economic well being of America’s families.”

Wednesday’s House vote marked the 33rd time the House has voted to repeal all or part of Obama’s healthcare law.

Fracking Protest Halts Drilling in Pennsylvania Forest

Activists opposed to the controversial gas drilling process known as “fracking” are hailing an unprecedented direct action that brought a drilling operation in Pennsylvania to a temporary halt. Dozens of activists with the group Earth First! blockaded an access road leading to a well in Pennsylvania’s Moshannon State Forest, stopping operations in an area targeted for heavy drilling. Two activists known as “tree sitters” hung from trees with anchor ropes strung across the access road. Drilling was reportedly suspended for 12 hours at the site before authorities dispersed the protest. Activists say it is the first time protesters have shut down a hydrofracking drill operation in the United States. Hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, involves blasting a mix of sand, water and chemicals into shale rock to extract gas. Opponents say the process imperils drinking water supplies, threatens public health and damages the environment. The protest action comes weeks after activists and residents at the Riverdale Mobile Home Park in Jersey Shore, Pennsylvania, staged a protest encampment against a company that had bought the park and evicted residents to make way for a fracking-related operation.

Hundreds of Occupy Wall Street protesters gathered at the park Wednesday afternoon and police reportedly began shoving people onto the sidewalk. The protesters had marched for six days from the Liberty Bell in Pennsylvania. During the rally, protesters sang Guthrie’s legendary folk ballad, “This Land Is Your Land.”

The United States has entered into its first-ever clean-up operation of Vietnamese areas contaminated by the toxic chemical defoliant Agent Orange during the Vietnam War. The United States sprayed nearly 20 million gallons of Agent Orange on a quarter of the former South Vietnam and border areas of Cambodia and Laos between 1962 and 1971. Agent Orange has been linked to cancer, diabetes and birth defects among millions of Vietnamese, as well as U.S. veterans. Earlier today, the U.S. ambassador to Vietnam, David Shear, kicked off a project to clean up the chemical at a major airport.

David Shear: “This process uses high temperatures to break down the dioxin in the contaminated soil and make it safe by Vietnamese and U.S. standards for the many men, women and children who live and work in this area. The dioxin in the ground here is a legacy of the painful past we share, but the project we undertake here today hand in hand with the Vietnamese is, as Secretary [Hillary] Clinton said, a sign of the hopeful future we are building together.”

Japan Marks 67th Anniversary of U.S. Atomic Bombing of Nagasaki

Japan is marking the 67th anniversary today of the U.S. atomic bombing of the city of Nagasaki. Some 70,000 people were killed instantly and another 10,000 died in the aftermath of the attack on August 9, 1945, which flattened the city. It happened three days after U.S. planes dropped the first atomic bomb on Hiroshima, killing an estimated 140,000 people.

TABACCO: Note the USA military NEVER bombed Hiroshima or Nagasaki prior to unleashing Big Bertha on them. The USA wanted a PRISTINE BOMB SITE for accurate assessment of DAMAGES, and it was always going to be the Yellow people of Japan, not the Caucasian people of Germany!

The USA made a major point of winning the War in Europe FIRST (against Caucasian adversaries so USA wouldn’t have to drop Big Bertha on Caucasians). Incidentally, it was Hitler and the Nazis who were working on an A-Bomb of their own, not the Emperor, but lost that race.

And yes, both FDR and Harry S. Truman were DEMOCRATS, so you can forget that Political Party stuff when it comes to Big Bertha!

The pharmaceutical giant Pfizer has agreed to a $60.2 million fine to settle allegations of making illegal payments to win contracts abroad. In a complaint filed by U.S. regulators, Pfizer was accused of paying bribes to foreign officials in more than a half-dozen countries to obtain business and increase prescriptions of its products. The alleged misconduct dates back to 2001.

TABACCO: CAPITALISM is a DIRTY BUSINESS. And when we spread it around the Globe, we spread the DIRT right along with it. The REPREHENSIBLE CAPITALIST PRACTICE, of government support for specific industries to give them an UNFAIR ADVANTAGE over similar industry in other countries thus negating the lip-service Principle of Markets regulating themselves worldwide, must cease! Yes, this practice takes place everywhere and bribery is not unique to the USA!

It is just the natural consequence of Capitalism wherever it is practiced!

Hackers Claim FBI Storage of Millions of Apple IDs

Computer hackers are claiming to have uncovered the FBI’s storage of millions of names of users of the computer giant Apple. On Tuesday, a group calling itself AntiSec released one million of what it said were 12 million Apple IDs stored on the laptop of an FBI agent. The group says it believes the FBI is using the IDs to help with surveillance. The FBI has denied the claim.

PS Of course the “FBI has denied the claim”! The FBI denied Cointelpro, the FBI denied surveillance on Martin Luther King and others, the FBI denied J Edgar Hoover was a drag queen homosexual and that his right hand “man”, Clyde Tolson, was Hoover’s male lover. Even today, the FBI would deny the existence of Extraterrestrials. Why would anyone trust the word of the FBI!

PS Yes, I have an Apple computer!

Police in riot gear arrested at least 17 protesters who sat down in the middle of a road leading to a Wal-Mart warehouse in Elwood, Illinois, on Monday in a bid to support striking workers. The arrests were made after some 600 people sang, chanted and marched toward the warehouse, which is run by a contractor but supplies Wal-Mart stores. Warehouse workers went on strike more than two weeks ago amidst allegations of sexual harassment, dangerous working conditions, unpaid wages and retaliation against organizers. Managers reportedly fired several leaders and threatened others after they delivered a petition. The strike in Illinois follows another strike by some three dozen workers at a Wal-Mart supply warehouse in Southern California who have also pushed for fairer workplace conditions.

Wal-Mart to Deny Health Benefits to New Part-Time Workers

Meanwhile in the United States, Wal-Mart is drawing criticism for reportedly planning to deny health insurance to newly hired employees working less than 30 hours a week, shifting the burden for their care onto the federal government. An internal company policy obtained by the Huffington Post shows newly employed part-time workers will no longer receive benefits, while those hired in or after 2011 will also lose out if their hours dip below 30 hours a week. Labor experts say Wal-Mart is following other large employers in exploiting “Obamacare” to shift health costs onto taxpayers. In its response to the story, Wal-Mart refused to disclose how many workers will lose their coverage by saying it’s decided to no longer answer questions from the Huffington Post, which it accused of biased coverage. The new policy is slated to take effect next month.

Report: Wal-Mart Pushed Back Against Safety Improvement at Bangladeshi Factories

New details have been revealed on the retail giant Wal-Mart’s ties to the Bangladeshi garment factory where 120 workers died in a fire last month. The New York Times is reporting Wal-Mart played a key role in blocking the improvement of electrical and fire safety at Bangladeshi factories. Two officials who attended a 2011 meeting in Bangladesh say a Wal-Mart representative helped quash a proposal to improve safety investments, calling them “not financially feasible.” Documents found at the fire scene also show that five of the factory’s 14 production lines were devoted to making Wal-Mart apparel.
